Tuscany in early Autumn – fantastic! Local farmers are busy in the vineyards, harvesting this year’s crop of grapes. Will it be a great vintage? We’ll hear the expert’s verdict in a few weeks. After the grape harvest, there’s no time sit around, all over Tuscany, silver green olive groves are heavy with juicy olives, just about ripe enough to pick, it looks like it’s going to be a bumper year in our little olive grove, perched high on the slopes of the Pratomagno mountains, looking out over the Chianti hills.

So when is the best time to visit Tuscany?

We get asked this one by lots of people when they are organising their trip and it’s such a difficult one to answer. Every season has so much to offer.

In Springtime, the Tuscan landscapes are lush green, a carpet of multi coloured flowers cover meadows and hillsides all over the region. It’s a real photographer’s and artist’s paradise. There are less tourists around and the temperatures are warm but not too hot.

In Summer, Tuscany turns golden, straw colour, the temperatures rise and there are festas and events in every town and village. Although there are more tourists, ironically many cities are quieter in August as most Italians head for the coast.

Autumn, as you’ve probably guessed by now, is Tuscan harvest time - wine, olive oil, mushrooms, chestnuts. Food festivals everywhere, not many tourists around, no queues, and with autumn’s golden reds, oranges and yellows it’s one of the most relaxing, pleasurable times to visit. If you’ve never tried new season’s cloudy green, peppery olive oil then you are missing one of life’s simple pleasures.

Tuscany in Winter might not seem like an obvious time to visit, but an Italian Christmas spent in a centuries old villa, dinner table laden down with the tastiest Tuscan food and wine in front of one the biggest log fires you can imagine is the stuff of dreams. Weather is usually mild and although not as well known as the Alps, Tuscany has some great skiing in the mountains between Florence and Pisa.

So, whether you’re a last minute type or an early bird who likes to get things organised well in advance, Tuscany has something for everyone, no matter what time of year.
